WHOLE (unprocessed, natural state) Foods vs. Fast Food

I wanted to share a page out of my food log in order to show everyone why I am trying to commit to eating WHOLE unprocessed, natural state foods the majority of the time.

Here is my food log for Friday, August 03, 2012:

Notice how much food I was able to eat for a relatively small amount of calories!! Now, if I took my total caloric intake for today  (1,223 calories) and tried to see how much food I could get for the same calorie allotment at a fast food burger restaurant (Carl’s Jr.’s is used here as an example) here is what I might end up with:

1)      Carl’s Jr. – Western Bacon Cheeseburger

740 Calories            34g Fat                  33g Protein         1,500mg Sodium              4g Fiber

2)      Carl’s Jr. – Crisscut Fries, 1 serving

450 Calories            29g Fat                  5g Protein           900mg Sodium                 4g Fiber

3)      Carl’s Jr. – Small Coke, 20oz

160 Calories            0g Fat                    0g Protein           10mg Sodium                   0g Fiber

TOTALS:

            1,350 Calories    63g Fat                  38g Protein         2,410mg Sodium       8g Fiber

THAT’S IT????  So instead of three large meals and several substantial snacks at home, I would only be able to eat just one burger combo meal at Carl’s Jr.’s  (or any other burger combo meal from most fast food chains) AND I would still be consuming more calories, fat, and sodium not to mention on missing out on fiber!  Although not as convenient, choosing to eat whole unprocessed foods the majority of the time has major (DRASTIC!) health benefits as well as financial benefits. DEFINITELY worth it to Todd and me!!!

What percentage of your diet consists of processed foods?

What do you think of this post?

  1. Wow that is crazy! Great comparison, Kelly. I think the 20 oz Coke is actually more than 160 calories too! I think it’s closer to 200 or 210 for 20 oz.
